Overseas Service Learning Trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand | 2018
I volunteered in a 5-days overseas trip, which aimed to equip students from a rural village in Chiang Mai with skills and knowledge in areas such as the English language, art and even coding. This project was in collaboration between Shuqun Secondary School and Tanue Wittaya School. I took charge of planning art activities and worked together with my group in applying our creative skills to craft enjoyable and meaningful activities.
As there was a language barrier between us and the Thai students, we adapted to the situation and demonstrated the art activities so that they could replicate the steps. This experience of working with children and teenagers has honed my communication skills in using the appropriate guidance for different age groups. In the future, I could be prepared by learning conversational Thai so that I could interact with the students without much difficulty. Despite this, both schools were able to bridge the cultural gap and made this journey an unforgettable one. |

Community Service at All Saints Home | 2016-2018
This community service project was initiated by my CCA, Girl Guides, in which we rendered our services to All Saints Home @ Jurong East by engaging 15 elderlies with a range of disabilities, including dementia and hearing impairment, in activities. With 10 sessions yearly, we planned meaningful activities for the elderlies so that they could spend time interacting with others and picking up new skills rather than spending majority of their time alone.
Taking on the role of an Assistant Company Leader in 2018 gave me the opportunity to lead my CCA in supervising and managing this project, which also enhanced my project management skills. Furthermore, I improved my ability in working as a team as I worked with other guides in selecting suitable activities and prepared the necessary materials needed. Even though the elderlies expressed their enjoyment at the end of each session, I believe I could improve by not being too rigid in sticking to the schedule and instead I should allow them to take their time to carry out and enjoy the activities prepared. |
Values-In-Action (VIA) at Home for the Aged | 2017
As the class chairperson, I organized and led my class in this VIA project which was in partnership with Bukit Batok Home for the Aged. The purpose of this project was to educate and guide students on concerning, taking care and respecting the elderly. I demonstrated my organizational skills as I delegated tasks to each group and ensured that the activities planned were within the budget.
Since this was my first time managing an event myself, it was stressful making sure everything went as planned, but it was also a fun experience because I learnt a lot and gained a variety of skills along the way. One of these skills would be my adapting to the challenges faced. For instance, I accommodated to the elderlies who did not speak English by getting peers to translate the instructions given. By doing so, it allows everyone to be engaged in the activities. Based on my involvement, I received the 'Outstanding Involvement in Service Learning Project Award'. |
